In Loving Memory of Phil : A Shining Star
December 10, 1989 - June 18, 2022
It is not hard to remember and celebrate the life of a remarkable soul, Phil, AKA Dip Black, a local Ottawa rapper who touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Phil was more than just a talented artist; he was a beacon of light, radiating kindness, humor, and positivity to everyone he encountered. His presence in our lives was a gift that will forever be cherished.
Born in St. Vincent and adopted into the loving embrace of a wonderful family in Ottawa at the tender age of three months, Phil's journey was one filled with love, support, and endless possibilities. His mom, Colleen, was always close to his heart, and he valued the realtionship they had. Phil looked up to his dad, and could always rely on him when he needed him the most. He loved his mom and dad dearly.
Phil grew up in the neighbourhood of Pineview, and from a young age, it was evident that he possessed a unique gift for music, which he nurtured and honed throughout his life. His passion for rap transcended the boundaries of a mere art form; it became a medium through which he connected with hearts and souls.
Phil had an extraordinary ability to brighten any room he walked into. With his infectious smile and his genuine warmth, he effortlessly spread joy and laughter, leaving a lasting imprint on everyone's hearts. He had an uncanny knack for being the shoulder to lean on, offering solace and understanding during times of sorrow. Phil's unwavering kindness and compassion knew no bounds, and he uplifted those around him, reminding us all of the inherent goodness that resides within humanity.
One of the most captivating aspects of Phil's spirit was his unwavering optimism. No matter the circumstances, he saw the silver lining, encouraging others to embrace positivity and find hope even in the darkest of times. His belief in the inherent goodness of the world served as a guiding light for those fortunate enough to call him a friend, son, uncle, or partner. And his laugh… What an infectious laugh he had.
The prospect of fatherhood filled Phil's heart with immeasurable joy and anticipation. Although his time as a father was tragically cut short, there is no doubt that he would have been an exceptional dad. His immense love, nurturing nature, and boundless energy would have made him an extraordinary role model, leaving an indelible imprint on the life of his child.
Phil's impact as an artist cannot be understated. His lyrics were infused with authenticity, reflecting his own experiences, struggles, and triumphs. Through his music, he inspired others to work harder, to embrace their individuality, and enjoy life. Phil's words resonated deeply, capturing the hearts of listeners, and leaving an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come. His incredible ability to write music was just the beginning, as Phil also directed many of his own videos. Phil could often be seen writing music, which was almost effortless for him. How many times was he seen mumbling to a beat with his phone in his hand, completely lost in his own words. Phil was the definition of gifted. He was a hard worker, both in his music career, as well as working his 9-5. Phil loved meeting new people in the city he was so proud to live in.
Those who had the luck of meeting Phil, or those even luckier to call him a friend, know he was truly one of a kind.
